GEORGE FERGUSON, RIP

With one of his trademark dashes down the ice, he gave us hope when little existed. He gave us pride when it was hard to come by.

Former Penguins winger George Ferguson passed away Sunday at 67. He had four straight 20-goal seasons from 1978-82. Ferguson is best known for scoring in overtime to eliminate Buffalo in Game 3 of a best-of-three preliminary round playoff series in 1979. It was the Penguins’ first series win since 1975, their last until 1989.

Ferguson was crazy fast. See below. He could have played today. Play-by-play icon Mike Lange gave him his oft-repeated nickname: “The Fergy Flyer.”

Ferguson was a good hockey player and a good man. He had lots of stories, but none better than his sprint down the rink at Buffalo’s Memorial Auditorium on April 14, 1979.

George Ferguson, RIP. He was a Penguins hero.
