NUTTING WON’T EVER SELL

Dejan Kovacevic wrote a column (click HERE) about how Pittsburgh politicians and businessmen should do what Milwaukee did: Embarrass Pirates Bob Nutting into making the Pirates’ books public.

When that happened in Milwaukee, the team got sold. The new owners try to win. The Brewers just made the playoffs for a second straight year. The Brewers outdrew the Pirates by over 1.4 million. All this despite a market two-thirds the size of Pittsburgh.

It’s a passionate column. It rallies the city and Pirates fans.

But it’s just pie in the sky.

Even if local politicos and magnates went after Nutting, you can’t shame somebody who’s without shame. Nutting has zero intention of ever selling.

Even if Nutting was successfully coerced, there’s no guarantee that the next owner would try to win, or even do anything different.

What happened in Milwaukee was the perfect storm.

It won’t be repeated here in Pittsburgh. It took a long time just to get the bike lanes right.

The Pirates will get worse before they get better. Except they might not get better.
