This past Sunday marked 27 years since the release of the self-titled album from Coverdale/Page in 1993. It was a sonic boom-level collision of my kingdoms: Vocalist David Coverdale from Whitesnake and guitarist Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin.
It was badass, too: A quintessential combination of what each protagonist brought to the table. So good, in fact, that Zep singer Robert Plant reunited with Page in ‘94 rather than allow Page to succeed with Coverdale, or vice-versa.
As a result, the “Coverdale/Page” LP was a one-off. A handful of live performances took place in Japan, but videos thereof aren’t great.
The best song was “Shake My Tree,” a tune so awesome that Plant deigned to perform it in concert with Page. But the whole album killed.
Page is 76, and hasn’t played live regularly since touring with The Black Crowes in 2000, and not at all since the one-night Led Zeppelin reunion in 2007. It would be great to see Page sit in with Whitesnake to play a few songs from Coverdale/Page, because those compositions very definitely deserve to see the light of day.
