Toadies - Possum Kingdom

Do you remember where you were the moment you first heard a song? Toadies “Possum Kingdom” wasn’t a life defining song for me by any stretch, but I remember the first time I heard it with lyrics that gripped my little ten year old brain in horror. I was in my Dad’s office at our house when the repeat of “do you wanna die?” unrelentingly blared from the tiny digital clock radio. I nervously laughed a bit and my sister and I started answering the question every round, “No, not today, thanks!” But I also remember saying to her, “Can you BELIEVE this is on the radio? The X is cool.”

Okay, I guess it did stick with me after all.

Toadies singer Todd Lewis based the lyrics on a real life story unfortunately, in which a a stalker in Texas became something of a folk tale. The stalker was peeping in windows and breaking into houses in the Fort Worth area and everyone was on edge. After the discussion of the stalker came up at his family’s Thanksgiving dinner, he found inspiration in building upon the story making the stalker a self-immolating cult-member figure and using local spots to elaborate on what made the whole story so scary. He found real life examples such as Possum Kingdom lake, where his family had property, and pulled additional inspiration from Stephen King novels.

Todd elaborated in the film Dark Secrets: The Stories of Rubberneck on the character he created who actually pops up in another Rubberneck track.

“He's lonely and freaked out and just wanting to lure somebody else into his little realm. This guy wants to convince somebody else to do what he did, which is to burn themselves alive in order to be this other thing. The essence of that is taking something that is beautiful and whole and destroying it in order to create something else. That's why in the video there's a creepy guy with a block of ice and he's creating this ice sculpture which will just be beautiful for just a moment and then it's going to melt and just be nothing. It's weird. It's how my brain works.”

This character, who ends up a ghost who haunts Lake Possum Kingdom essentially, is referred to in the track “I Burn.”

It’s creeptastic and directed by Thomas Mignone.
