Sublime - Badfish

Sublime’s “Badfish” got a video that seemed to encompass the easy breezy vibe that California band embodied in the song itself. It was a nod to The Ziggens, and depending on how deep a Sublime fan you are; this song can just be about girls, ganja, and booze or something much darker.

This song originally appeared on a 1991 demo where singer Bradley Nowell’s drug use had not yet progressed to heroin, which was the cause of his untimely death in 1996. (Still most fans agree the song is about his struggles with substances in general). As the band’s fame grew after the demo’s release his drug use began to spiral. Fans interpreted several metaphors in the song to represent Nowell’s relationship with heroin noting that he would sometimes change the last line of the chorus during live performances from “won’t somebody get me off of this reef,” too “won’t somebody get me off of this tweek.” There’s also a suggestion that a “Badfish” is a term describing a person who exposes someone else to heroin for the first time.
