PENS SHAKY & DUMB, WIN ANYWAY

A win is a win is a win.

But there was much to dislike about the Penguins’ victories Friday and yesterday.

*In Friday’s 3-2 overtime win vs. Buffalo at PPG Paints Arena, Jeff Carter took an offensive-zone tripping penalty with five seconds left. But the Penguins’ scintillating PK came through and Carter ultimately scored the OT winner. God must watch over fools who commit dumb penalties.

*In Sunday’s 3-2 win at New Jersey, Mike Matheson took a totally unnecessary cross-checking minor with 9:25 remaining. The Devils scored a power-play goal to pull within 3-2, ending the Penguins’ successful penalty-killing streak at 39. (Matheson previously scored what turned out to be the winning goal. God must watch over fools, etc.)

*Sunday’s game ended when Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped a breakaway with one second left. How does the trailing team in a one-goal game split the defense and manufacture a breakaway off a stretch pass in that situation? It seems impossible. (Brian Dumoulin and Kris Letang were the guilty parties on defense.)

But the Penguins have won seven straight. They are nine points clear in the wild-card race and just three points behind the third-place New York Rangers in the Metro Division.
