PRESS RELEASE

Penguins to Make Six Selections in the 2023 NHL Draft

The Pittsburgh Penguins will have six selections in this year’s NHL Draft, held from June 28-29 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN.

The Penguins will make selections in the first (14th overall), third (90th overall), fifth (142ndoverall), sixth (174th overall) and seventh (217th and 223rd overall) rounds.

Round 1 of the draft will begin on Wednesday, June 28 at 7:00 PM ET and be broadcasted on ESPN. Rounds 2-7 will take place the following day, Thursday, June 29 at 11:00 AM ET and be broadcasted on NHL Network.

Below is a breakdown of each of Pittsburgh’s picks:

  • Round 1         Pick #14
  • Round 3         Pick #90
  • Round 5         Pick #142
  • Round 6         Pick #174
  • Round 7         Pick #217
  • Round 7         Pick #223

The Penguins have had the 14th-overall selection in the NHL Draft only once in team history, selecting forward Ron Snell in 1968. This marks Pittsburgh’s highest selection since the team drafted defenseman Derrick Pouliot with the eighth-overall section in 2012.

Pittsburgh acquired its third-round pick along with Ty Smith from the New Jersey Devils on July 16, 2022 in exchange for John Marino. The Penguins’ two seventh-round picks were also acquired in trades – the 217th overall pick was acquired from Toronto along with Filip Hallander in exchange for Jared McCann on July 17, 2021, and the 223rd overall pick came from Florida in exchange for last year’s seventh-round pick.

The Penguins do not have a selection in the second or fourth round, or their original third-round pick, after multiple trades:

  • The Penguins’ second-round pick (46th overall) was traded to Nashville on March 1, 2023 in exchange for Mikael Granlund.
  • Pittsburgh’s fourth-round pick (110th overall) was sent to Montreal along with Mike Matheson in exchange for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling on July 16, 2022.
  • Pittsburgh’s original third-round pick (78th overall) was sent to Los Angeles along with its 2022 third-round pick in exchange for Jeff Carter on April 12, 2021.
