GRIFFIN'S GREATNESS = MORE LOSING

The usual suspects are delirious because phenom shortstop/outfielder Konnor Griffin has been promoted to the Pirates' Class AA team at Altoona.

Griffin, 19, is the No. 1 prospect in baseball. The Pirates' farm system is ranked No. 2 in baseball.

Griffin is an incredible talent.

But when he gets to Pittsburgh, the Pirates will still lose.

The Pirates will waste Griffin. Just like they're wasting Paul Skenes, MLB's best pitcher.

The Pirates will waste that entire talent-packed farm system.

It's what they do.

They're rotten at development and won't pay to keep/get legit stars. (Mitch Keller and Bryan Reynolds aren't "legit stars." They're merely affordable.)

So, don't get too excited.

Unless you're somebody who attaches allegiance to individual star power, not team results. Lots of fans are currently like that, especially younger ones.

The Pirates just want a phenom to sell tickets, merchandise, hype and hope.

Skenes will pass that baton to Griffin.

Griffin fits that purpose even better because he plays every day, not every fifth or sixth day.

Skenes and Griffin won't be on the Pirates together for long, if at all.

Depends how much Skenes gets when his arbitration years start in 2027. Owner Bob Nutting won't pay any player $30 million for one year. Not even MLB's best pitcher. Skenes will get traded if his arbitration comes in too large.

The celebration of Griffin is already overbearing.

But it's going to lead to the same place: Palookaville.

Griffin could be Honus Wagner, and it won't matter.
