Nobody knows anything about Don Kelly's contract to manage the Pirates. It's very likely short and cheap. He might be working for the same money he'd been earning as bench coach prior to replacing Derek Shelton as skipper.
Kelly has done OK with a very flawed roster: His record since taking over is 45-49. Shelton was 12-26 this year before he got canned.
The usual suspects are clamoring for Kelly's contract to be extended.
But there's no rush to do that.
If he were available, Kelly wouldn't be in demand to manage elsewhere.
That said, the Pirates probably couldn't hire better, nor would they spend the money necessary to hire better.
Just let Kelly keep managing.
If Kelly someday gets the Pirates to finish above .500 or get a playoff spot, then we can talk multi-year and better compensation.
But there I go, foolishly worrying about Bob Nutting's money.
Kelly's doing a good job. In context.
That context is MLB's toilet.
It is good PR to have a Mt. Lebanon guy managing. Surely a Don Kelly bobblehead is on the horizon.
