I'm having doubts about Omar Khan as Steelers GM, not least because of how he's handled (or hasn't) the No. 2 receiver spot.
But Khan and the Steelers have also mangled the Dan Moore Jr. situation.
The Steelers drafted Moore in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft. He started at left tackle immediately but wasn't good for his first two seasons.
Last season, Moore's third, he got a bit better.
This season, by all accounts, Moore has blossomed. He's a solid starting LT, not an All-Pro but perhaps in the NFL's top half.
Moore is a free agent at season's end. He will command more than the Steelers will want to pay. Moore likely won't be retained.
Broderick Jones, mostly a bust in his season-and-a-half at right tackle after the Steelers traded up to get him in the first round of last year's draft, will move to left tackle. That's Jones' preferred spot. A worse player will play a more important position.
If the Steelers had this unshakable faith in Moore that kept him in the lineup through his struggles, he should have got a contract extension before now.
If the Steelers saw Jones as the long-term left tackle, he should have been put there right away.
The Steelers erred on both sides of that bargain. Bad roster management by Khan and Coach Mike Tomlin.
