Every time an NFL edge rusher of note signs a new long-term contract, we're told the price goes up for T.J. Watt's next deal.
But it shouldn't.
Watt has one season left on his current contract. His cap hit for 2025 is $30.4 million.
Watt is 30. He didn't have sacks in 10 of 18 games last season. He had zero stats in the Steelers' last two games.
Make Watt play out the final year of his existing deal. Then franchise him as necessary moving forward.
Given his age and a decline in his play last season, that's what's best for the team. Go year by year.
If Watt stages a "hold in" or chooses to miss game checks, that's up to him. But the Steelers should do what's best for the franchise.
The Steelers won't.
They will give Watt one dollar more than Myles Garrett, or Micah Parsons, $40 million per or whatever, make Watt highest-paid among edge rushers.
God forbid that gym teacher should know an unpleasant moment.
Maybe Watt could get a hefty bonus if he participates in winning a playoff game. (That incentive would never be paid out.)
