CAN PENS GET ROBERTSON?

Here's an excerpt from my latest column at TribLive.com:

There was never any chance of getting 26-year-old star winger Jason Robertson from Dallas, as this space fantasized.

The Penguins don’t have the trade capital to get Robertson’s rights from Dallas.

Signing Robertson when he hits restricted free agency July 1 would cost them four first-round picks.

Robertson will command upwards of $15 million per on a seven-year contract (eight years if you do a sign-and-trade).

Robertson wouldn’t want to come to the Penguins. It’s not a destination franchise like it was 10 years ago.

Despite what's written above, I'm still hearing whispers of Robertson to the Penguins.

I don't see how.

President of hockey ops/GM Kyle Dubas has just one weapon going for him, and that's the necessary salary cap space.

Maybe Dubas is determined to get Robertson no matter what. Robertson has been a target dating back to before last season. Here's betting the new owners want to make a big splash right away.

Robertson had 45 goals and 51 assists in 2025-26. He's an established young star that would provide the Penguins a re-set of sorts.

What does Dubas give up for him?

How does he convince Robertson that Pittsburgh is an attractive landing spot? (Perhaps money talks.)

Stay tuned.
