Johnny Rzeznik didn’t even like the advance screening of the movie City of Angels, in which he knew he was to contribute to the future soundtrack. However, in a dark place in his life after his marriage ended, thinking his band had peaked, and living out of a motel, the idea of angels felt necessary. (Also he heard Peter Gabriel and U2 were going to be on it and that might have done it).
“What tuning is that in?” my husband asked as I was re-watching the video. Well, Johnny had two broken strings on his guitar when he was writing so that’s why you get some innovative chord choices in there. Also it was oddly named after folk singer Iris DeMent, just because her name was pretty.
