Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day: Red Hot Chili Peppers "Warped"

Because we love ‘em all. Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day

Red Hot Chili Peppers “Warped.”

Since we just had the Super Bowl yesterday, I figured we’d pick another band that has actually performed the Super Bowl before: The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Full disclosure from an MTV baby here: I didn’t grow up a Chili Peppers fan. Most music videos in the early years of my life were bombastic, androgynous, guy-liner wearing bands in spandex. This video for “Warped” (and I’m imagining with Dave Navarro as the conduit), all of a sudden got me interested in RHCP. We’re all very well aware of how the weird, moody and harder rock album, One Hot Minute was historically shunned at the time from die-hard fans. The Navarro era didn’t last long, (or what some youtube commenters call Jane's Hot Chili Addiction) but it was enough to get some new people through the door.

The video was director by bassist Flea’s brother-in-law, Gavin Bowden and is features the band, scantily clad as they are want to do, in a room acting weird. The fact that Anthony Kiedis doesn’t decapitate Navarro with his mic stand at any point is also pretty impressive.

And how times have thankfully changed. Something that shocked the viewing audience when it was released, was the infamous Navarro-Kiedis kiss at the end of this video. The record label didn’t want it left in, and the band did receive hate and backlash for it at the time. Knowing it would turn off more conservative members of their audience, RHCP refused to take it out and as Anthony had said, “if they couldn’t accept what we were doing, we didn’t need them anymore.”
