Today is Billie Joe Armstrong’s birthday by the way! Let’s celebrate with a video, hmm?
While Billie has always said that this song was written during a period of insomnia after his kids were born, try and convince some enthusiastic sects of Green Day fans it’s not about being messed up on speed and you’ll have a fight on your hands. The internet is fun, right?
Brain Stew and Jaded are two separate tracks on the album Insomniac so there are two separate videos in one, directed by Kevin Kerslake. Kevin, by the way has directed videos for everyone: Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, Soundgarden, Depeche Mode, Rise Against, Smashing Pumpkins and Rancid just to pick a few. Video one, is stock footage intertwined with the band in a blurred out Sepia desert, being dragged on a couch through a junkyard/landfill/place you definitely don’t want to be, ever. The second part, is much more iconically Green Day, not only it’s is speed, but the extreme close-ups and wild performance footage.
