Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day: Fiona Apple - Criminal

Because we love ‘em all. Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day

Fiona Apple - Criminal

The first time you saw the video for Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” you had the same impulse as everyone else. Is this legal? The retro seventies vibe of the wood paneled rooms, polaroid cameras, barely clothed party goers, and a hot tub full o’ man feet, felt a bit voyeuristic and with Fiona only eighteen years old at the time, it was really put under the microscope.

But the song was just an example of Fiona’s endless powers. Before releasing the album Tidal, the record label had insisted that there was no clear hit single. In defiance, Fiona quickly (allegedly in forty-five minutes) wrote “Criminal,” with an air of faux regret and delicious contempt from the smartest girl in the room.

Mark Romanek directed the video and there were reports that Fiona Apple didn’t speak to him for many years after it was released, because of how retrospectively she had felt taken advantage of at her young age. The song won Fiona Apple a Grammy and it also nabbed MTV Video Music Awards for Best Cinematography and Best New Artist.

Fiona Apple somewhat recently made a pledge to donate all of the 2019-2020 royalties of "Criminal" to the While They Wait Fund which helps refugees secure everyday necessities, immigration fees, and legal assistance.
