Because we love ‘em all. Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day:
The Breeders - Cannonball
Does Kim Deal have a podcast yet called, “What’s the Deal? With Kim Deal,” yet? I’ll make some phone calls. The Deal sisters, Kelley and Kim, already the epitome of effortlessly cool got a video directed by the EQUALLY cool Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Spike Jonze.
Kim had started The Breeders as a side project while still in the Pixies. It gave her a chance to switch up from bass to guitar and make music with her sister. The song title was almost “Grunggae,” because Kim thought the main riff sounded like grunge and reggae, but we like “Cannonball,” a bit better. (She still makes reference to the reggae thing in the lyrics). The song is so interesting, I feel like I catch something new with each listen, but it didn’t have any of the traditional makings of a hit song; weird feedback, vocals that sounded sporadic, non-sensical lyrics. It thrived on its unique vibe and entered the US Hot 100, their best performing single.
It’s been used in cinema, television, and advertising a lot so yes, while a one hit wonder, it has given the band an insane amount of mileage.
