Deftones: Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)
Around The Fur helped signal a real changing of the guard in 90’s music. There were plenty of bands that were a part of this change, ushering in what would ultimately become known as Nu Metal or Alternative Metal, but for me personally The Deftones were my first taste (and calling them Nu Metal was just never a fit).
What made the Deftones stand out in this class of bands however, was their understated aggression that pulled in elements of new wave and dark alternative. Vocalist Chino Moreno’s oscillation of etherial crooning and untethered screams gave them a depth not quite seen yet in their peers. I had read once that someone had dubbed them the “Radiohead of Metal,” and while I’d need to do a full dissertation to confirm, there’s something there.
Bonus video today too, here's the link for the unearthed footage of the very first time they performed the track live. There will be some swearing on that one since it's footage from a live show. Remember those?
The video was directed by renowned photographer Frank W. Ockenfels III, who has also done work on Breaking Bad and Harry Potter.
