Jane’s Addiction - Been Caught Stealing

How does this grocery store make any money? Especially after you pay the stripper at the end of the day, I mean yeeeeesh. When kleptomania hits, there’s no finer soundtrack than Jane’s Addiction’s biggest tune, “Been Caught Stealing.”

In addition to being a number one song for the band, the cartoonish and colorful shoplifting clientele helped cement it in MTV history and won the group a VMA in 1991. Seeing it as a kid, it was a bit traumatizing between Perry’s fishnet face and the man impersonating a pregnant lady to help sneak out an assortment of produce, but it certainly was iconic.

The dog at the beginning of the song by the way was Perry Farrell’s dog Annie who he had recently adopted from a shelter. Because Annie was a bit nervous, he brought her to the studio and started barking when he was in the sound booth. They decided to go ahead and record it. Co-producer Dave Jerden said Annie “auditioned” for the part and truly did bark on cue.
