Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day: Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way

Because we love ‘em all. Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day:

Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way

“I was born long ago, I am the chosen, I’m the one.” Damn I believed every word of that the first time my eyes caught the throwback yet space-age colosseum style rock show imagery, with a commanding guitar riff and the larger than life presence of Lenny Kravitz.

That riff is like the ABC’s of rock n’ roll; it’s not necessarily complex for the guitar geeks but it packs a punch of classic guitar hero ethos. The song was understandably critically acclaimed as a "savior of rock", and of course, it came together in just a few minutes. Kravitz explained, “You know, I was jamming with Craig Ross, who I wrote the song with. It was one of those songs that happened in 5 minutes. We were jamming. I thought there was something happening. I told Henry to turn the tape machines on, and we played it. And that was it. And then I went and wrote the lyrics on a brown paper bag, I remember at my loft on Broome Street at the time. Went in and sang it the next day. And that was it."

The video was directed by Mark Romanek and listen I was still a wide-eyed music obsessed kid and thought that when adults went to rock concerts, this is what it looked like. That incredible chandelier by the way, was created using 983 cylindrical 23cm incandescent light tubes, the kind of lights you’d use for an aquarium.

Cindy Blackman is the drummer you see here and even though she’s not on the studio recording, she was absolutely the right choice for the video. She’s actually a well accomplished jazz drummer but damn she’s got the chops for rock n’ roll. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her and I think it inspired me to try my hand at being a terrible drummer for a few years.

Rock out and enjoy.
