Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day: Radiohead - No Surprises

Because we love ‘em all. Here’s your 90’s Video of the Day:

Radiohead - No Surprises

This is a video full of stress, especially if you’re claustrophobic or don’t love the water. By the looks of the behind the scenes video, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke didn’t love this experience either. As the sole star in the "No Surprises" video, he’s really taking one for the team.

Grant Gee directed the video and was inspired by Space Odyssey to put Yorke in an astronaut helmet but it was the line, “a job that slowly kills you,” that gave him the idea to gradually fill the helmet with water. Thom can hold his breath for a pretty long time (he rehearsed and could get to about a minute), but under the stress of filming, couldn’t get beyond ten seconds. It was basically a full day of torturing him.

Just in case you’ve never seen the "making of" footage, we’re gonna pop the bubble a bit here. The words on the screen and music were sped up, so while Thom’s breath holding abilities are still put to work, it’s not nearly as long as you think. And as you’ll see…he’s pretty upset the majority of the time. (I would be too!)
