Soul Coughing was one of those mysterious 90’s bands that fell apart during their peak in popularity. In the case of the band’s leader, Mike Doughty, drugs were the main culprit that led him to disband the group. (According to Mike, Soul Coughing was pretty dysfunctional and it doesn’t sound like he thinks back on it very fondly if you check out his memoir The Book of Drugs).
For a long time he continued to make music without any major or independent label and it wasn’t until a chance run in with Dave Matthews backstage at Bonnaroo in the early 2000’s that music became a viable career once again. Dave Matthews had been such a huge Soul Coughing fan that he offered to put out Mike’s solo work as Haughty Melodic.
