Henri Richard has passed away. He was 84.
The younger brother of Maurice “Rocket” Richard was a superb player in his own right. He won the Stanley Cup a record 11 times. He’s in the Hockey Hall of Fame. His No. 16 was retired by the Montreal Canadiens. He scored two Stanley Cup-winning goals. Henri Richard was fast and electric, personifying the Canadiens of his era.
I watched Game 7 of the 1971 Stanley Cup Final on TV. It’s one of my earliest hockey memories. Henri Richard scored twice to rally the Canadiens from a 2-0 deficit to triumph at Chicago, 3-2, and win the Stanley Cup. Watch the goals below. Vintage Henri Richard, especially the game-winner. Speed and skill.
Henri Richard, RIP. Go, Habs, go.
