As March Madness ponders playing in empty arenas because of the COVID-19 virus, consider that pro wrestling is a pioneer in that field. Two famous empty-arena matches can be seen below. The original is Terry Funk vs. Jerry Lawler in Memphis in 1981. The other is The Rock vs. Mankind at halftime of Super Bowl XXXIII in 1999.
The Funk-Lawler match ended when Funk went to stick a sharp piece of wood in Lawler’s eye, but Lawler maneuvered the object into Funk’s eye instead. Funk’s selling of the “injury” is certainly memorable: “My eye! I can’t see! Doctor! Doctor!”
