LIT UP…AT THE DRIVE-IN (NSFW)

Butler’s Starlight Drive-In is apparently the Pittsburgh area’s No.1 rock venue, however temporarily.

The Clarks, Gene the Werewolf and The Hawkeyes played there Saturday. Now Buckcherry steps in front of the big screen Aug. 13.

It’s a shame guitarist/founding member Keith Nelson isn’t still in Buckcherry. He grew up in North Sewickley Township, just 30 minutes or so away.

One LP went platinum and another went gold. But Buckcherry never exploded like I thought they should. They are debauched, high-octane Sunset Strip rock.

But with the exception of the ballad “Sorry,” Buckcherry’s best songs were impossible to play on the radio. “Lit Up” is an explicit tribute to cocaine. “Crazy Bitch” and “Too Drunk to ***k” are laced with expletives. (The former single still went double-platinum.)

But Buckcherry made a solid career of it, and singer Josh Todd is impossibly manic. Check out the videos below. (Some are edited for language. Some aren’t.)

I only recently realized that the opening riff to “Lit Up” is a lift from KISS’ “Shock Me.” That’s fine by me. It’s my favorite KISS song. Ace Frehley represent!
