Ben Roethlisberger is recovering from covid. That’s not easy. I know.
Roethlisberger hasn’t practiced in two weeks.
Roethlisberger can’t be cleared to play ‘til Saturday.
If Roethlisberger gets the OK, who should start Sunday night when the Steelers visit the Los Angeles Chargers: Roethlisberger or Mason Rudolph?
Roethlisberger seems the obvious answer. Two weeks isn’t a long time for an accomplished 18-year-vet to go without practice. Roethlisberger won’t forget how to play.
I’m more concerned about the aftereffects of covid, which can be considerable.
If Rudolph does play, I guarantee he’ll do better than he did against Detroit.
For one thing, that’s a low bar.
But Rudolph knocked off some rust this past Sunday.
If he plays, Rudolph will be much more prepared. It won’t be a last-minute thing.
Rudolph is a competent NFL quarterback. He’s 5-4-1 as a starter.
I would start Rudolph.
But Mike Tomlin will start Roethlisberger, and that isn’t a wrong decision.
