WHAT'S GOING ON AT TACKLE?

Here's an excerpt from my latest Trib column:

The real story of OTAs is Broderick Jones splitting reps between right and left tackle.

The Steelers drafted Jones in last year’s first round to play left tackle. That’s always been Jones’ projected position. So put him at left tackle. Have a plan. This is like the Pirates with Henry Davis.

But Dan Moore Jr. is still running with the first team at left tackle.

It’s madness. You drafted two tackles in the first round over the last two years. How is Moore still starting? And if you’re going to put Jones at left tackle and Troy Fautanu at right tackle come training camp, why waste time now?

This is coaching incompetence, and to what end?

Moore should be the tackle that flip-flops at practice. If he's going to be a backup, Moore needs more experience at right tackle. Jones and Fautanu need to get established at their respective spots.

But perhaps Moore starts the season at left tackle. That keeps Jones out of his long-term position and puts the Steelers' latest first-round pick on the bench.

Moore has tested poorly by every metric that exists. But the Steelers like him.

"Like" figures into the Steelers' decision making far too often. In this instance, "like" is a close cousin to "stupid."
